Rana GoodmanKeymasterFor several years there has been quite a bit of discussion with the city of Henderson, Sun City Anthem and Solara residents to find a solution to easy access for pedestrians attempting to navigate their way safely cross Anthem Parkway and Sun City Anthem Parkway.
Several of the communities that make up the area are 55+ or seniors blending in with home owners from Inspirada and Anthem Highlands that add family living.
Much of the year you will see many homeowners walking along the many new sidewalks added in the past year or so by the City of Henderson; The nagging question? how to keep pedestrians safe when attempting to get across the busy roads and also slow traffic to a safer speed.
This was discussed again recently at a meeting with Henderson Mayor, Michelle Romero, Anthem residents and several other Henderson officials. Although no solution has been reached so far, Henderson Councilman Dan Shaw was determined to come up with a few alternatives that might get the job done in a reasonable amount of time. The following is an idea that I think might just please many of my neighbors, I welcome your thoughts which you can add in the reply section below.
I met with Councilman Shaw 8/15/24 and he came up several ideas after explaining several reasons why getting approval for a traffic light would take an exorbitant amount of time to get approval.
I have included a draft of a “S MEDIAN,” suggested by the councilman for Anthem Parkway to ease the issue at Wild Iris and Solara Moon as drivers head down the hill toward Sun City Anthem and the loop around the community.
This is a rendering of an “S median” that could be placed there allowing pedestrians to cross the parkway using the center medians as a stopping point to wait for traffic to pass if need be.
This would mean that vehicles from Solara Moon would have to turn right (toward Anthem Center) and those from Wild Iris would have to turn right towards Albertsons. One would assume both would be able to make a u-turn at the first break in the median to go the other way.
I do have to “fess-up” Dan Shaw had another suggestion, a “Round-About” I must say I automatically cringe as I write that since I personally find them so very confusing!
We look forward to your comments that we will forward to the city.

ParticipantThe traffic situation along Anthem Parkway is a mess. A roadway, with a speed limit of 45mph while traffic flows unabated at 55 to 60. Couple that with sparse controls which allow for reasonable access by vehicles and pedestrians entering or crossing Anthem Parkway, a chaotic scene. Anthem Parkway may meet Henderson Traffic Department Policy Standards, but that doesn’t mean the Traffic Policy and related design standards cannot be changed to accommodate more current Engineering Guidelines. The Mayor and City Council are responsible for establishing roadway policy.
Reducing the speed limit to 35 mph may be an acceptable option. This speed limit change may be a great way to avoid much more expensive alternatives or Policy changes.

Elizabeth BreierParticipantPersonally, I don’t see how trying to make a U-turn in the middle of the parkway to go in the direction one intends is going to be safe. Certainly not for the drivers not for pedestrians. The oncoming traffic can often be heavy and fast and drivers trying to U-turn into that is not ideal, especially for senior drivers. I don’t believe in Band-Aids. It may take a little longer to fix it properly, but the solution is a traffic light. That traffic light will also alleviate some of the issues in trying to enter Anthem Parkway from Somersworth. If traffic is stopped from time to time in response to a traffic signal, that will allow those entering from Somersworth a better opportunity of getting into the flow of traffic on an Anthem Parkway.
For Dan to use the excuse that it will take too long to put in a traffic light is ridiculous since the problem existed the entire time he’s been on the Council Handy and this issue keeps rearing its head, but nothing is ever done.August 17, 2024 at 3:56 pm #9089Andrew Peluso
ParticipantLiz,
A traffic light. The best we could “Wish” for, absolutely. Unfortunately I’ll be dead before that happens.
First they’re going to tell you they are going to form a committee for study, then they’re going to refer it to the Traffic Engineering Department who will say after a study, it does not meet their criteria for placing a traffic signal, then we will ask our elected representatives to help, then they’ll have a meeting with the public, then they’ll have to do another study, then they’ll suggest options to delay and delay. Then they don’t have the money, then a couple of years have passed and we will have to start all over again with our newly elected leaders who will refer it to a committee….
Liz, I would be thrilled if you could get it done. When you get that traffic light please let me know, I’ll be at the Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, just look for my Urn ⚱️. It will have this message on it, “Take care of yourself, take care of yourself and take care of somebody else.”

Elizabeth BreierParticipantSadly, I fear you are correct.
It’s interesting that Dan is up for reelection and he’s taking an interest in this problem that has existed the entire time he has been HCC.

ParticipantPredictable. Have you ever tried to contact him at city hall? Have you ever left a message and gotten a response?
I have….Tried….and…..Tried. May the force be with you!!August 17, 2024 at 5:22 pm #9092
Elizabeth BreierParticipantHe probably doesn’t respond because he’s too busy defending himself against the lawsuits for charging usurious interest rates.

ParticipantI’ve read that in the mainstream media. Well the good news for him may be, “If you learn from a loss, you haven’t lost.”

Rana GoodmanKeymasterHi Rana
—The attached S-median from Dan Shaw is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. Do you know who was organizing the traffic light at Wild Iris? Any thought on that issue?
Don ManningAugust 31, 2024 at 8:10 am #9103
Elizabeth BreierParticipantI agree with Don. It seems ridiculous. I don’t live in either of those neighborhoods, but I can’t imagine being forced to only go in one direction when coming out of my neighborhood and then look for an opportunity to make a U-turn, which is not always the safest maneuver either. Somehow, they managed to put a traffic light at Beckler on Eastern so those people can come out of their neighborhood safely without having to cross traffic coming in two directions or U-turn.
