    NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH ALERT

We had two burglaries in Sun City Anthem recently, in Southridge and Westridge Villages.   Both homes had for-sale signs in front.

In the first case the garage door release from the motor had been disengaged, allowing the garage door to be manually opened from the outside.   Nobody was home when the entry was made through the garage door. It is possible that the burglars had disengaged the emergency latch for the garage door when they visited a realtor’s open house at an earlier date. A large (but empty) safe was taken from the garage.

In the second case burglars entered by prying open the sliding glass door in the rear of the home, after unsuccessful attempts to pry open rear windows. The elderly owners were sleeping when the woman heard noises outside and awakened her husband.  When her husband went to investigate, he confronted the burglar in the hallway, yelled, and the burglar fled.

    PRECAUTIONS:

Residents should be alert to unusual activities around homes with for-sale signs, such as people snooping around the residence or unusual cars parked there at night. If you own a home with a for-sale sign, take extra precautions regarding its security. Inside and outside video surveillance is a good precaution.

Realtors should be on the lookout for suspicious non-age-qualified people who may be scoping out the house. After an open house, realtors should check to be sure the garage door emergency release has not been disengaged from the motor, which would allow burglars easy entry later on.

Neighborhood Watch and SCA Community Patrol should give increased attention to homes for sale, especially during open house sessions.   Community Patrol presence could be a deterrent.  Record license plates if suspicious vehicles are observed, which could be important if there is a future burglary there.  Report suspicious activity to neighborhoodwatch@scacai.com .

Do not confront suspicious individuals — call 311. Call 911 if there’s a crime in progress or personal safety is threatened.
