Sometimes in your life, as you go barreling down the road,
There will come a moment, when a burden lightens the load.
The road may be winding, it may be straight and narrow,
With little time to notice, a tree, a stream, or a sparrow.
Maybe nothing has ever stopped you, dead in your tracks.
To show you one simple thing, that your attention lacks.
Who can answer the question, why the world in which we live,
Could change from which we take, to what we see it gives.
A child was raised as a hunter, back when food was not aplenty,
Taught an old and dying culture, long before he was twenty.
As the young man stood at the precipice, emotions came to swirl,
Changed in an instant, by a glance into the eyes of a squirrel.
Two birds on a wire, a fox at play, all creatures suddenly tame.
The whole world once taken for granted, was never again the same.
Inside the eye of an Orca, there lies far more than just a fish.
God’s creatures command our respect, well beyond the dinner dish.
We are not the only creatures, with the right to inhabit this world.
One hunter’s world was blessed, from inside the eyes of a squirrel.
This was the moment that this writer was forever changed. It is reflected in almost everything I write.
Go to the zoo. Observe wildlife, or even a pet if you have one. Look into their eyes. Even if you don’t see a soul or a reasoning brain, ask yourself, is that what it takes to matter and be revered as one of God’s creatures.
