How many of you have received a letter like this?

Over the past year or so I have been receiving “demand” letters from a company that uses only Home Warranty Division Private & Confidential with a bar code as their return address. It begins as follows…..

    RESPONSE TO THIS NOTICE REQUESTED

    ATTENTION: your name

“It is important you contact our office at (their 800 number) upon receiving this notice to avoid any unnecessary delays in your coverage before 9/24/2-26

This notice is to inform you that the property at xxxx xxxxxxxxx (your actual address) may be expiring or has already expired. Our records show that you have not contacted us yet to get your coverage up to date.

Please call us immediately as this will be our final attempt to notify you about activating your home warranty up to date.

The letter then goes on to warn you of all the terrible expenses you might incur when you are caught without their coverage. It ends with “we reserve the right to revoke your eligibility for service coverage after the expiration date of 9/24/2026. Please respond by calling 1-800″—bla-bla-bla!

Remembering the reaction my mother had to mail now and then when she was in her 90’s it hit me that some of our seniors may take this letter seriously and call the “number trap” falling into a home warranty from a “scam type” outfit.

If you know of anyone who may be gullible or suffering a little dementia, please reach out and warn them…. I’d hate to think of anyone falling for this….. I remember the last “sort of argument” I had with my mother just before her 91st birthday was the day she came into my office with a letter in her hand and she said to me “Rana, look at this I’ve just won the Publisher’s Clearing House thing!”

“let me look at it mom” I replied and burst out laughing…. “Mom, it says You might have won, not that you have won!” I won’t tell you the rest of that conversation, it was not pretty, but she was 100% certain she had won, and there was no Mercedes in our driveway and not even one rose!

Just toss this trash.  We all get so much of this stuff, so if it doesn’t look familar just put it in your shredder and it’ll be gone in seconds!

Note too that we all get tons of this stuff from cretins that want our money and will do anything to get it, so as the sergeant on the old TV series always said, “Let’s be careful out there.”

Oh, and don’t let a weak moment get you to do a follow-up and open the email.  Don’t, don’t, don’t!!!

On a side note:  If your computer gives you a odd looking screen, SHUT IT DOWN INSTANTLY, and do a restart to eliminate the potential problem.
