KeymasterCrossing the Line of Decency
By: Dick Arendt
I recently read a disturbing article on David’s Anthem Journal that should cause concern to any and all residents of Sun City Anthem.
It appears that he has taken it upon himself to request correspondence from any and all residents who have received emails from Mr. Robert Stern, a man who does not support the upcoming Yorktown Grill.
No matter what your personal viewpoint on this matter, in my opinion, this latest antic from that blogger seems to forget that despite what our country has experienced in the past few years, all in this nation have the right to free speech, and that before he makes such a request, he fully disclose the purpose to which it is being made.
Over time, many of us in our community have been the victim of this individual’s schemes and commentary to demean those with whom he has disagreement; and this time, he has crossed yet another line to which many believe has some form of subversive objective.
Our nation over the past number of years has seen various forms of the media do its best to support the belief that speech must be controlled; that many alternative opinions much be suppressed; that government and the media have the right to determine what is and what is not something you should hear or read.
We have seen an Attorney General look at parents who question the content of their children’s education referred to as “domestic terrorists”, and even worse, we have seen the supposed premier law enforcement agency of the country make attempts to control the media by contacting a major social media organization to withhold vital information regarding the son of a presidential candidate in order to affect the results of a presidential election.
Those days and those actions must cease if our country is to continue the very principles on which it was founded…
…and though you may agree or disagree with Mr. Stern’s comments, he has the full right to make them and send his opinion to whomever he chooses.
Alternatively, that blogger too has the same right to comment as he chooses…
…but to make a formal request to collect information without fully disclosing the purpose of the request, especially the fact that he holds no office of authority in the Sun City Anthem community, crosses a line of decency, and is all too reminiscent of George Orwell’s novel “1984” in which the terminology “Big Brother” was introduced.
Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with Mr. Stern’s beliefs, I would hope that if any residents value the love of free speech, that you ignore this latest attempt by a blogger to support suppression of a citizen’s right to his opinion.

KeymasterA well written editorial Dick, thank you. One thing I found interesting under the topic of “pot calls the kettle black”…. It does not seem so long ago that David Berman wrote on his blog many times blasting you for requesting comments from your readers who were upset with an SCA club president’s post in the Spirit magazine…..
